On March 18, the Department of Defense (DoD), Defense Health Agency (DHA) responded to the global health crisis associated with increasing demand for ventilators with a challenge to develop low cost ventilators. This innovation challenge was launched on the Vulcan platform. Over the course of 7 days, 172 innovative ideas, two different panels of engineering and medical experts, selected 5 of the most promising designs; hence VULCAN V emerged!

With the global pandemic beginning to rage and ventilators in high demand, Wright Brothers Institute responded to a challenge from the Defense Health Agency to quickly develop low-cost ventilators. The challenge was launched on the Vulcan platform, and over the course of seven days, 172 innovative ideas were presented to two panels of engineering and medical experts. Five designs were selected to go forward.
Part of the challenge was securing an FDA Emergency Use Authorization, and WBI turned to TAMM Net Inc. to guide the teams through the FDA EUA process under an unprecedented timeline. WBI is proud to have collaborated with TAMM Net, whose regulatory expertise in the medical device industry contributed greatly to getting the devices into the hands of front-line medical professionals.
